Herbert D. ''Don'' Basinger, 75, Army Veteran and Conrail Retiree
Herbert D. "Don" Basinger, Sr. 75 of Lorain died Monday, October 3, 2005 in New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph following a brief illness.He was born October 14, 1930 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. He moved to Lorain in 1952. His winter residence was in Ellenton, Florida.
Mr. Basinger retired from the Car Repair Department of Conrail railroad Fairlane Yard in Lorain in 1992. He worked there for 32 years.
He served in the Army with the Combat Engineers from October 21, 1947 until August 23, 1952. He served three and a half years in Germany. He received the Occupation Metal, Good Conduct Metal and was Honorably Discharged.
He was a life member of the Veterans of foreign Wars, Mullen - Murray post 451 Lorain, Transport Workers Union of America, Local 2019, Cleveland. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge 2117 Palmetto, Florida.
Among the survivors are his wife of 52 years Alice M. (nee Nicholson); son Herbert D. "Don" Basinger, Jr. of Elyria; daughters Margaret "Peggy" Christopher of Palmetto, Florida and Amy Marie Burgess of Lorain, Five Grandchildren; sisters Opal Conrad of Lorain and Ruth DeMichelis of Dunbar, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alex and Margaret (nee Keefer) Basinger; brothers Glen and Dale Basinger and a sister Goldie Kerns.
Friends may call Thursday, October 6, 2005, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM in the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, Ohio. Where funeral service will be Friday morning at 10:00AM in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
