Edward L. Thompson Sr., 81, Sheffield Twp. Assist. Fire Chief

Edward L. "Ed" Thompson, Sr., age 81, of Sheffield Township died Thursday October 20, 2005 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky, where he had been a resident for the past four years.

Born June 2, 1924 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, Mr. Thompson was a resident there until moving to Sheffield Township in 1952.

A World War II veteran of the United States Army from 1943 - 1946, he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. Ed served in Luzon, Philippines and was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific with Bronze Star, Philippine Liberation, and the Victory Medal.

Mr. Thompson was a forman with the former Mascon Toy Company in Lorain for 25 years until its closure. He was then employed by the United States Steel Corp. in Lorain.

Ed became a Sheffield Township Fire Department volunteer in 1957, and served as Lieutenant from 1977-1982, and Captain from 1982-1983. He was appointed Assistant Fire Chief at Station No. 2 on Clinton Avenue in 1982, where he served in that capacity until his retirement in 1999. His career with the Sheffield Township Fire Department spanned 42 years.

Mr. Thompson was an active member of Hungarian Reformed Church of Lorain. He was also a member of the Mullen-Murray Post 421 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Lorain. He was an avid Clearview High School Sports Booster and enjoyed following their athletic teams. He also enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his son: Edward L. Thompson and his wife Chris of Lorain; son Michael A. Thompson and wife Cherita of Amherst; three grandchildren; and sister Laura of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes (nee Pongracz) in 1980, parents George and Iva (nee Lewis) Thompson; brothers Ernest and George, and sisters Ada and Alice.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 23 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue in Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 AM in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Peter L. Toth, pastor of the Hungarian Reformed Church of Lorain, officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
