Edward A. Brosky, 97, Chairman Emeritus of First Federal Savings of Lorain
Edward A. Brosky, age 97, of Lorain, died Sunday October 30, 2005 at Anchor Lodge Retirement Center in Lorain.Mr. Brosky was born on December 9, 1907 in Berea, Ohio and had been a resident of Lorain since his childhood.
He was a graduate of Lorain High School and went on to complete a two-year curriculum of study at Oberlin Business College. Mr. Brosky was no stranger to hard work. In the early 1920’s he delivered yeast to Lorain area bakeries in the early morning hours and then went on to fulfill banking duties at the former Lake Erie Savings & Loan Company. After a short dinner break, he would complete his day working as a sales associate at Sam Klein Men’s Store.
On January 22, 1928 he became the first full time employee of the Lake Erie Savings & Loan Company serving as its Assistant Secretary and sole teller. On October 21, 1938 the financial institution was granted its federal charter and became known as First Federal Savings of Lorain. Mr. Brosky was appointed as president of the financial entity in 1960 and was installed as it’s first Chairman of the Board in January of 1973. On December 6, of 1999 he was elevated to the position of Chairman Emeritus. During his tenure at First Federal Mr. Brosky attended seventy-eight consecutive annual stockholder meetings, which is a fete unequalled by anyone else in the banking industry. He served as a member of the Cuyahoga County Savings and Loan League and fulfilled duties as the organization’s president in 1965. He also was active with the organization’s successor body the Northeast Ohio Savings and Loan League.
In his earlier years, Ed was an accomplished athlete; he was touted as a scrappy shortstop that played on teams competing in the Tri-County League of northern Ohio as well as the Nativity / U.P.C. Baseball League. He also played on a team sponsored by Fisher Foods. Mr. Brosky possessed an innate ability to move with the motion of the pitcher and was highly successful at regularly stealing home plate during league play.
He was a parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain. He joined the Polish Fisherman’s Club of Lorain in 1949 and was its oldest living member at the time of his passing. He was also a member of the United Polish Club of Lorain, the Polish-American Citizens Club of Lorain, Pulaski Post # 38 of the Polish Legion of American Veterans, the Central Businessman’s Association, and Knights of Columbus Council # 637.
He enjoyed fishing, league bowling, and golf. He also exhibited a passion for shuffleboard and received recognition as champion of the citywide shuffleboard tournament held in Clearwater, Florida.
Survivors include his son Robert Brosky of Amherst, a daughter Eileen Pointer of Wheaton, Illinois seven grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and a brother Bert Brosky, D.P.M. of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen M. (nee Nocleg) in 1989, by his parents Frank and Helena (nee Makowska) Brosky, by a brother Chester, and by sisters Eleanor Pastron, Florence Skarupa, and Sr. Mary Alphonsine (Wanda).
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 2, 2005 from 4 to 9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church 1454 Lexington Avenue Lorain. The Reverend Robert Glepko, pastor of Nativity Parish and Reverend Mr. Robert Dybo, permanent Deacon will concelebrate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery Lorain.
