Helen Y. Pandy, 98, Taught Kindergarten at Garfield School

Helen Y. Pandy (nee Chea), 98, of Lorain, died Wednesday November 16, 2005 at Ohio Extended Care Center in Lorain after a long illness.

She was born November 23, 1906 in Bacska, Hungary and immigrated to America in 1908.

Helen graduated from Witherbee High School, New York and attended Plattsburg College, New York and Kent State University.

For 10 years she taught high school in New York. In 1934 she married and moved to Lorain. In 1949 she taught kindergarten in Lorain for 23 years mostly at Garfield School.

She was a member and former Sunday school teacher of the Hungarian Reformed United Church of Christ in Lorain. She was a member of the Lorain Education Association of Retired Teachers, the Lorain County Retired Teachers Association and the American Business’ Women.

Helen enjoyed traveling, reading, teaching, playing cards and being with her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter Margery Ward of Lorain, granddaughters Kathy Welch of Lorain and Pamela Quarando of Amherst, 5 great grandchildren and 2 nieces Kathy Steele of Virginia and Judy Milks of Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Pandy, Jr. in 1962, son Ronald Pandy and 4 grandchildren in 1964 and sisters Ethel Chea, Elizabeth Chea and Margaret Ovensen.

Friends may call Friday November 18, 2005 from 5:00 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 7:00 p.m. at Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Attila Szemesi, pastor of Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ will officiate. Private burial will be held at a later date at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
