Gilbert L. Slavik, 58, Served in the Army National Guard
Gilbert L. Slavik, Jr., 58 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Monday, November 28, 2005 at his home following an eight-month illness.He was born May 17, 1947 in Buffalo, New York. He lived in Tonawanda, New York for ten years before moving to Amherst, Ohio. He graduated from Marion L. Steele High School with the class of 1965. He received and Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Lorain County Community College and a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Technology from Ohio University.
Gilbert served in the Army National Guard of Ohio for six years. He was employed by USS / KOBE for thirty-one years, retiring in 1999 in supervision and environmental affairs. He also was employed by the City of Oberlin for five years as an operator in the Water Environmental Production Control Facility.
He was a member of St. Peters United Church of Christ in Amherst. He also belonged to the Beaver Park Yacht Club, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Λerie 1442, served on the Lorain Family YMCA Board, and the Seventh Generation Board. Gil and his family owned and operated an ice cream concession trailer for five years. He was an avid sailor and raced competitively on the Great Lakes for 20 years and enjoyed cooking, hunting, fishing, reading, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of thirty-six years Judith K. Slavik (nee: Sines); his daughters Karie Slavik of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kelly J. Slavik-Bosworth of Rossford, Ohio, and Sandra L. Lima of Oberlin; two grandchildren; his mother Mary C. Slavik (nee: Dobson) of Amherst; his brother Douglas J. Slavik of Amherst, and his sister Susan Syrowski of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his father Gilbert Slavik, Sr. on May 2, 1998.
Friends may call Wednesday, November 30, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Additional viewing will take place from 10 a.m. to the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 1, 2005 from St. Peter United Church of Christ; 582 Church St., Amherst. The Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will perform honors. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
