Nicholas G. Provenza, 84, Twenty Eight Year Veteran of Prudential Insurance

Photo of Nicholas G. Provenza Nicholas G. Provenza, Sr., age 84, of Lorain, died Tuesday December 6, 2005 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following an extended illness.

He was born in Lorain, Ohio on June 26, 1921 and had been a resident of Lorain for his entire life.

He was a graduate of Lorain High School; following graduation he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He later was inducted into the United States Army where he served as Corporal fulfilling duty assignments in Northern France, the Rhineland, and the Ardennes. He was the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Unit Award, the American Theater Service Medal. The World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed as an agent, certified underwriter, and securities advisor for the Prudential Insurance Company where he served a diverse client base throughout greater Lorain. He was the recipient of multiple Presidential Achievement awards from Prudential and retired from the insurer in 1986 following a career that spanned twenty-eight years.

He was a parishioner of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst as well as a member of Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 of Lorain along with Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans. His hobbies included solving crossword puzzles and reading with a special interest in history. He had previously enjoyed league bowling.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-eight years Angela (nee DeMarco), sons Salvatore Provenza ( and wife Dianne) of San Diego, California, Nicholas G. Provenza, Jr. ( and wife Vickie) of Seattle, Washington, daughter Roberta Smigel ( and husband Tom) of Dayton, grandchildren Salvatore Provenza, Jr. ( and wife Sloane), Elena Provenza, Alicia Provenza, Dominic Provenza, Miranda Provenza, Gabriele Provenza, Joshua Smigel, Brian Smigel, and Jenna Smigel.

He was preceded in death by his parents Salvatore and Frances (nee Rosso) Provenza, by brothers Joseph, Sam, and Anthony “Nino”, and by sisters Frances DeVito, Anna Mancini, Catherine DeLuca, Theresa Ortenzi, Mary Sciulli, and Marianne Gressler.

Visitation will be Friday, Decemeber9, 2005 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue – Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:45 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10:30 a.m. in Saint Joseph Catholic Church – 200 Saint Joseph Drive – Amherst. The Reverend Lawrence N. Martello, MA, M.Div, pastor of the parish will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Resurrection Mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery – Lorain where the officers and members of Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 will conduct full military honors.
