Carl Owen Schieferstein, Jr., 80, World War II Veteran

Carl Owen Schieferstein, Jr., 80 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain following a fourteen-month illness.

He was born July 17, 1925 in Amherst where he has been a lifetime resident. He graduated from the former Central High School in Amherst.

He served in the US Navy during World War II where he received the European African Middle Eastern Medal with one bronze star, the Philippine Liberation Medal, the American Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific African Campaign Medal with two bronze stars.

After his military service, he was employed by the Kroger Food Store for eight years. He also worked at Bendix Westington House in Elyria for fifteen years as a millwright and then later was employed by Kamms Auto Parks in Lorain for thirteen years. He was a lifetime member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst. He was also a member of the Vermilion Amvets. Carl enjoyed woodworking and made grandfather clocks and curio cabinets. He also loved cars, being and working outdoors, gardening, renovating homes and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-seven years Ann Marie Schieferstein (nee: Hutchinson); his sons Larry Schieferstein of Amherst and Bruce Schieferstein of Brownhelm Township; his daughter Carla Lopez of Lorain; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and his sister Thelma Grisel of Vermilion.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carl, Sr. and Martha Schieferstein (nee: Strauss); and by his brother Milton Schieferstein in 2002.

Friends may call Thursday, December 29, 2005 from 5-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 20, 2005 at 11 a.m. from St. Peter United Church of Christ; 582 Church Street, Amherst. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor will officiate. Burial will be in Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to CHP Regional Foundation/New Life Hospice, 3700 Kolbe Road, Lorain, Ohio 44053.
