John Mayfield Jr., 71, Enjoyed Traveling and Flea Marketing
John Mayfield, Jr., 71 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 8, 2006, at his home following a short illness.He was born January 30, 1934 in Quintin, Kentucky where he was raised and lived till the age of sixteen. John has resided in the Amherst and South Amherst area for the past fifty-two years.
John served hi country in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed briefly in the state of Washington at McCord Air Force Base. After his military career, John worked as a crane operator at the Cleveland Quarries in South Amherst. Following his time at the quarries, John owned and operated a bus fleet as well as a garage. He then operated an excavating service and was owner and operator of a car wash on State Route 113. Following this, John drove semi-trucks for Jones Motor out of Springfield, Pennsylvania. John’s last endeavor was owner and operator of Green Acres’ Park-n-Swap formerly known as Johnnie’s Flea Market. He was a member of the South Amherst American Legion Post #197 as well as being an Ohio Teamster Local #407. John was an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling and flea marketing and above all loved his family.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-three years, Wilma Jean Mayfield (nee: Jones); his daughters Sandra Oesterman of Amherst and Phyllis A. Healy of Henrietta Township; three grandchildren; his sister Wanda Ray of Cincinnati; his brother Hurstle Mayfield of Grafton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son Glen Dale Mayfield on January 16, 1982; by his parents Johnny and Clara Mayfield (nee: Thompson); and by his sisters Edith Nichols and Hazel Mayfield.
Friends may call Wednesday, January 11, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst. Funeral services with the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will be held Thursday, January 12, 2006 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. Harold Taylor, pastor of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Amherst will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
