Carmela A. Monia, 90, Enjoyed Sewing and Cooking

Carmela A. Monia, (nee Tassone), age 90, of Lorain, died Monday January 30, 2006 at the Kingston of Vermilion.

Mrs. Monia was born in Bradford, Pennsylvania on September 11, 1915 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1935.

She was a graduate of the Saint Joseph Hospital School of Practical Nursing and later went on to attend Lorain County Community College where she graduated in 1967 as a member of the college’s first nursing program with certification as a registered nurse. She was employed by the former Lorain Community Hospital for more than twenty years retiring in 1978.

Carmela was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter where she was also a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Heart.

Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, ceramics, and collecting antiques. Additional interests included travel with one of her favorite destinations being Hawaii.

Survivors include sons Charles A. Monia of San Jose, California, and Joseph M. Monia of Lorain, daughters Mary Ann Stanton of Amherst and Jane F. Bender of Indianapolis, Indiana, six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a sister Yolanda Pisciotta of Buena Park, California.

She was preceded in death by her husband Anthony R. Monia in 1987, by her parents Peter and Mary (nee Vacario) Tassone, by sister Flora Tassone, by brothers Joseph and Patrick Tassone, and by half brother Pete Tassone.

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 1, 2006, from 9:00 a.m. until time of closing prayers at 10:00 a.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue – Lorain. A funeral mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. in the Catholic Church of Saint Peter – 3501 Oberlin Avenue – Lorain with the Reverend Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the parish officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery – Lorain.

The family encourages memorial contributions in Mrs. Monia’s memory to the Saint Peter Parish Endowmnent Fund – 3651 Oberlin Avenue – Lorain, Ohio 44053.
