Charles H. Kelly, 72, Former Mayor of the City of Sheffield Lake

Photo of Charles H. Kelly Charles H. Kelly, 72, of Sheffield Lake, died Sunday, February 5, 2006 at St. John West Shore Hospital in Westlake after a suffering an apparent heart attack.

He was born September 28, 1933 in Cleveland and had resided in Sheffield Lake since 1958.

Charlie graduated from Benedictine High School in 1952 and then served with the US Marine Corps as a Sergeant during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

He worked for 30 years as a meat cutter and meat manager for Fisher Foods, Fisher Fazio Costa and Fazios stores in Lorain County and western Cuyahoga County. Later he worked as an attendant and driver for Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel in Lorain.

Charlie served as Mayor of the City of Sheffield Lake from 1989 to 1995. He had served on city council as Council-at-Large representative and President of Council. He was also a Democratic Precinct Committee Person in the City of Sheffield Lake.

He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Sheffield Lake and the church Holy Name Society, AMVETS Post #55 and VFW Post #8686, both of Sheffield Lake, Knights of Columbus, Ohio PERS & Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union Local #427/880.

Charlie enjoyed golf and bowling and participated in many leagues in the area. He played softball for Doyle Electric in Lorain and St. Thomas in Sheffield Lake.

He enjoyed camping and had camped at Terrace Lakes Campground in Sullivan since 1976. He enjoyed traveling and had visited Hawaii. In 2003 he visited Ireland. An avid Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan, he attended spring training for many years at the team’s Winterhaven, Florida site.

He enjoyed attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years Judith A. Kelly (nee Kilbane), daughters Eileen Jenkinson and her husband Jeff of Greenville, Ohio, Kathleen Bevaque and her husband Joe of Vermilion, Maureen Hromada and her husband Jerry of Lorain and Colleen Kelly of Amherst, 8 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, brother James P. Kelly II and his wife Madonna of Alpharetta, Georgia and sisters Jeannette Polk and her late husband John of Brunswick and Rita Luciano and her husband Lorenzo of Independence and an uncle to many.

He was preceded in death by his parents James P. & Gertrude Kelly (nee Stuntebeck) and an infant sister.

The family will receive friends Thursday, February 9, 2006, from 3-9 PM at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where a Christian Wake service will be held Thursday at 4:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:15 AM in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 521 Harris Rd, Sheffield Lake. The Rev. Stephen Shields, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
