Helen M. Degan-Hughes, 94, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church Member

Helen M. Degan-Hughes (nee Wilson), 94, of Amherst, died Wednesday March 15, 2006 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Delaware, Ohio.

She was born February 9, 1912 in Byesville, Ohio and had resided in Amherst for the past 30 years and had previously resided in Elyria and Lorain.

Helen was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township and the American Legion #118 Women’s Auxiliary in Amherst.

She is survived by her sons: Dennis Degan of Riverview, Michigan and Ronald Degan of Lorain, daughters: Shirley (Degan) Pozega of Lorain, Beverly (Degan) Brumby of Vermilion and Linda (Hughes) Phelps of Joshua Tree, California, 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and sister Julia Hegedus of Elyria. She was preceded in death by her husband Norman Hughes, son James Degan, parents William & Anna Wilson (nee Rubish), sisters Anna Shinsky, Mary Charnicky and Helen Dzabia and brothers John Wilson and Vince Wilson.

The family will receive friends Monday, March 20, 2006, from4-8 PM at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the Parish Rosary will be said Monday at 4:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 AM in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at 10:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 N. Ridge Rd., Elyria. The Rev. James Ols, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
