Dominic A. Calabrese, 89, Veteran of the US Airforce
Dominic A. Calabrese, 89 of Lorain died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at the home of his daughter in Elyria Township following a short illness.
Mr. Calabrese was born in Monessen, PA on December 10, 1916, moving to Lorain as a child. He was a lifelong resident of Lorain. He was a 1934 graduate of Lorain High School and a graduate of the Oberlin Business College.
He was a veteran of the US Airforce attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a communications instructor. He served from 1941 - 1945.
From 1945-1959, he owned and operated the Sheffield Lake Food Market in Sheffield Lake, that also served as a post office and meat market. He attended Cleveland State University in 1959 and received his real estate brokers license. He was a real estate broker from 1959 until he retired in 1994. He was a retired Prudential insurance agent, retiring in 1994.
Mr. Calabrese enjoyed snow skiing until age 75. He was a league bowler, a member of the Canasta Card Club and a poker club. He enjoyed golf, going to Windsor, Ontario, and playing bingo. He participated in both the land and water exercise programs at the former Lorain YMCA.
He ran a small flower and vegetable stand on Lake Ave on the honor system. He used produce and flowers he grew in his own garden.
Mr. Calabrese was a member of the Sheffield Lions Club. He was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship in 2000 by Lions International for his volunteer work with sight testing with school age children. He was a member of the IAV Post 1, VFW Post 451, and the Lorain Community Senior Center. Mr. Calabrese is a member of the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain.
He is survived by a daughter Debra A. Macur and son in law David Macur of Elyria, OH and two grandchildren, a brother Joseph Calabrese of Mesa, Arizona.
Mr. Calabrese is preceded in death by his first wife Marie Josephine (nee Pesanelli) Calabrese in 1961, second wife, Laura L. (nee Ortenzi) Calabrese in 1994, his parents Anthony and Theresa (nee Tucci) Calabrese sisters, Alice Romano, Mary Mantin, Emma DeFazio, Rose Alesio, brothers; Paul and John Aquilla, Louie, Millie, Frankie, Albert and Mike Calabrese.
At Mr. Calabrese's request there will be no visitation or services. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Lorain, OH.
