Edward J. Gonas, 87, Participated in the Battle of the Bulge

Photo of Edward J. Gonas Edward J. Gonas, 87, of Lorain died Sunday June 18, 2006 at his residence after a long illness.

Mr. Gonas was born October 6, 1918 in Lorain, where he remained a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of the former Lorain High School.

A veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, he served during World War II and was a participant in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.

He retired from United States Steel Corporation, where he was employed as a machinist.

Ed was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain, and the Holy Trinity Holy Name Society. He was also a member of JEDNOTA and the United Slovak Societies. He enjoyed walking, being with his family, and talking with neighbors.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Mary Ellen Gonas (nee Settlemire) of Lorain, daughters Patricia Stitak of Beecher, Illinois, and Linda Teets of Lorain, 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and sister Agnes Schmetzer of Avon.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary (nee Botchick) Gonas, and brothers Albert Gonas, John Gonas, and George Gonas.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM in Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 2428 Elyria Avenue, Lorain, with the James Schmitz, pastor of St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, officiating.

Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain where the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 will conduct military honors.
