Lillian M. Kanary, 82, Elementary School Teacher for Sheffield/Sheffield Lake Schools

Photo of Lillian M.  Kanary Lillian M. Kanary (nee Sterk), 82, of Sheffield Lake, died Wednesday July 12, 2006 at Avon Oaks Nursing Home after a long illness.

She was born March 10, 1924 in Lorain and had resided in Sheffield Lake since 1952.

Lillian graduated from Lorain High School with the class of 1942A. At the age of 38 when her children were older she began attending Kent State University on a part time basis and graduated with a teaching degree 8 years later in 1970.

Lillian was an elementary school teacher in the Midview, Clearview and Sheffield-Sheffield Lake School Districts. She retired after 20 years having taught the majority of her career in the Sheffield/Sheffield Lake School District. She was nominated for both the “Sheffield/Sheffield Lake Teacher of the Year” and “Sheffield Lake Citizen of the Year.”

She was a member of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Lorain, a member and past president of the Erie Shores Art League in Sheffield Lake and a member and past president of the Community Center Seniors in Sheffield Lake.

Lillian enjoyed international travel, volunteering for Meals-on-Wheels, gardening and painting with watercolors. She had many of her paintings featured around the local area.

She is survived by her daughter Kathleen Radman of Amherst, sons: Richard Kanary of Sheffield Village and Kenneth Kanary of Lorain, 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and brothers Robert Sterk of Avon and Raymond Sterk of Vermilion. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Kanary in 1997 and parents Peter and Mary Sterk (nee Maholic).

The family will receive friends Friday 4-8 PM at the Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the Parish Rosary will be recited Friday at 7:30 PM.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9:30 AM in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, 1705 E. 31st. St., Lorain. The Rev. Paul Krajnik, pastor, and the Rev. Joseph Yelenc will concelebrate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
