Michael Elkovich, 86, World War II Prisoner of War
Michael Elkovich, 86, of Lorain, died Friday July 21, 2006 at Harborside Health Care in Westlake after a long illness.He was born October 19, 1919 in Jefferson City, Pennsylvania and had resided in the Lorain area most of his life.
Michael served with the US Army during World War II as a Private with the 9207th TSU TC. He was a prisoner of war in Africa for nearly 4 years. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.
Michael worked as a clerk at the American Stove Works in Lorain. He enjoyed walking, working the crossword puzzle, reading and sports. He was an avid Cleveland Indians fan.
He is survived by his brother Frank Elkovich of Michigan, sisters Kathryn Sustersic of Lorain, Mary Plaso of Elyria and Anne Murdaugh of South Carolina and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Steve & Ann Elkovich (nee Troyan), brothers Steve Elkovich, Adam Elkovich and John Elkovich and sisters Helen Elkovich, Ann Elkovich, Emily Elkovich and Margaret Elkovich.
The family will receive friends Wednesday 9:00 AM until the time of funeral services at 11:00 AM at Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Linda Krasienko, niece of Mr. Elkovich, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
