Leonard J. ''Lennie'' Cunningham, 78, Supervisor
Leonard J. "Lennie" Cunningham, age 78, of Lorain, died Thursday August 3, 2006 at the Avon Oaks Nursing Home following an extended illness.He was born on March 29, 1928 in Cambridge, Massachusetts and had been a resident of Lorain since 1958 coming from his native Massachusetts.
Lennie was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Force serving as a Corporal attached to the 1600th Air Maintenance Squadron. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal.
A parishioner of Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain, he was employed as a supervisor in the paint department at Ford Motor Company’s Lorain Assembly Plant. He retired in 1980 following a career that spanned thirty-two years with the auto maker.
He was an avid sports enthusiast and was the co-founder of the Westford Little League in Westford, Massachusetts. He was also an active member of the Lorain High School Steelmen Booster Club. Additional interests included enjoying time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-seven years Dolores (nee Dumont), sons Kevin Cunningham of Fall River, Massachusetts, Corey Cunningham of Lorain, daughters Cheryl Polevchak of Louisville, Kentucky, Kim Demyan of Oberlin, and Shelly Winger of Kathleen, Georgia, along with eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mr. Cunningham was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Rose (nee Mulligan) Cunningham and brothers Eugene Cunningham, Jr. and Warren Cunningham.
Visitation will be Monday, August 7, 2006, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Avenue Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning at 9:30 in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church 1305 East Erie Avenue Lorain. The Reverend Joseph West, O.F.M. Conv., Pastor of Saint Anthony Parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery Lorain.
