Secundino ''Mundo'' Arroyo, 86, Received a Congressional Award

Secundino "Mundo" Arroyo, 86, of Lorain, died Thursday, August 17, 2006,at Community Health Partners hospital, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on June 1, 1920 in Caguas, Puerto Rico He moved to Lorain as one of original incentive programs between US Steel and Puerto Rico in 1948.

He received a Congressional Award at the 50th Anniversary of the Puerto Rican Workers for the steel plant. He worked in the Open Hearth of United States Steel Lorain-Cuyahoga Works, Lorain retiring in 1973. He worked there for 25 years.

Mr. Arroyo was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain. He dedicated his life to the improvement of the church and devotion to the family. He was a Eucharistic Minister, Cursillista de Cristiandad (Cursillo Movement), Sociedad del Santo Nombre (Holy Name Society), St. Vincent de Paul Society, Usher, and a member of United Steel Workers Local 1104, Lorain.

He loved gardening, playing cards, sports, praying the Rosary and laughing at good jokes.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Petra Arroyo (Reyes), his sons William, Angel, Nelson, and Tony Arroyo all of Lorain, and Edward Arroyo of San Diego, California; daughters, Carmen Perez, Iris, Nilda, Judy Arroyo all of Lorain; 19 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; sisters Leonor Arroyo of Caguas, Puerto Rico and Delores of Orlando, Florida; brother Higinio Arroyo of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ramon and Juana (nee Martinez) Arroyo; 8 brothers and sisters, son Antonio Arroyo; daughter, Delores Arroyo, and granddaughter Amanda Arroyo.

Friends may call Sunday, August 20, 2006, 4-8 p.m. at Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 E. 31st St, South Lorain. Funeral services Monday, August 21, 2006 with closing prayers at 8:45 am in the funeral home followed by Mass 9:30 at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain 44055. The Reverend Fr. Bruce Ward, former pastor of Sacred Heart Chapel now missioned in Mexico will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
