Michael A. Petrillo, 86, Retired Steelworker and D-Day Veteran

Michael A. Petrillo, 86 of Lorain, died Friday, August 18, 2006 at his home.

He was born December 20, 1919 in Lorain and has been a lifelong resident. He graduated from Lorain High School in 1938.

He served in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer during WWII. He received the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, 4 Bronze Battle Stars, WWII Victory Medal and Honorable Service Lapel Button.

On D-Day he received a Presidential Unit Citation by landing on Utah Beach with the Fourth Infantry Division at 8:00 am and completed an air strip before sundown. He saw extensive combat throughout WWII.

He retired from US Steel, Lorain Works after 41 years as a layout-man in the boiler shop.

He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, Italian American Veterans Post 1, AMVETS Post 47 and the Disabled American Veterans, all in Lorain. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking for the church picnics.

Survivors include his sons, Michael and James, both of Lorain; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; brothers, Orlando of Elyria, John of Vermilion and Fior of Lorain; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded-in-death by his wife, Jean (nee Passanisi) in 1991, parents, Angelo and Marie (nee Cera) and a sister, Louise.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 20, 2006 from 4-7 pm at the Dombrowski-Humphrey-Riddle Funeral Home, 1939 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, where services will be on Monday, August 21, 2006 at 11:00 am.

Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain with full military honors presented by members of IAV Post 1.
