Billy Wayne McCord, 76, Enjoyed Fishing & Hunting

Billy Wayne McCord, 76, and a resident of Vermilion, passed away Monday, October 2, 2006 at Cleveland Clinic following a long illness.

He was born September 22, 1930 in Bruce, Mississippi. He has been a resident of Vermilion since 1958.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Billy was employed with the Lorain Plant of the Ford Motor Corp for 37 years retiring in 1989 as a mechanic. He was a member of the Vermilion Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5776, the Vermilion American Legion Post #12, and the Lorain UAW Local #425. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening, yard work, baseball and was a fan of all sports.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Janie Frances McCord (nee Hobbs); his son Michael McCord of Lebon, Oregon; his daughters Vickie McPhie of Lorain and Rosemary McCord of Memphis, Tennessee; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; his brothers Charles McCord of Mississippi and James McCord of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; his sisters Marlene McCord and Mary Lou McCord, both of California; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son Gary McCord in 2004; by his parents Lewis McCord and Cordie McCord-Kurth (nee Wells); by his brother Henry Lewis McCord; and by his stepfather Bill Kurth.

Friends may call Wednesday, October 4, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave, Amherst. Funeral services with the Vermilion Veterans Military Honor Guard performing honors will be held Thursday, October 5, 2006 at 1:00 p.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. James Smucker, pastor of Heritage Presbyterian Church in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will be in Rugby Cemetery, Brownhelm Township.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the AMerican Diabetes Association; 4500 Rockside Rd. Suite 440, Independence, OH 44131 of the charity of the donors choice.
