Carl Pando, 83, Standout Varsity Letterman At Brookside High School Age 83

Carl Pando, age 83, of Elyria, died Sunday October 22, 2006 at his residence following a brief illness. Mr. Pando was born October 23, 1922 in Fiemington, West Virginia and had been a resident of Lorain County for his entire life.

He was a graduate of Brookside High School as a member of the class of 1941; while at Brookside he was a four year varsity letter winner on the basketball team and was acknowledged as one of only a handful of individuals to ever win a starting role there as a freshman. He later participated in Class A Softball and was also recognized as Lorain County Champion in both ping-pong and horseshoes.

Carl went on to serve in the United States Army during World War II. He fulfilled duty assignments as a Sergeant and administrative liaison attached to Company B of the 756th Railway Service Battalion in the Rhineland. He was the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. While serving in the military, he won a position on the divisional basketball team and competed in games all throughout Europe.

Mr. Pando was employed as a foreman with the Nickleplate Railroad Company, and its successor, the Norfolk and Southern Railroad. He retired in 1984 after a career that spanned more than forty years with the railroads.

Survivors include his daughter Karen Johnson of Amherst, grandson Arthur "Archie" Johnson, II of Amherst, granddaughter Mrs. David (Gwen) Pierce of Amherst, great granddaughter Alex Pierce, great grandson James Pierce, and brothers Lenin “Len” Pando of Sheffield Village and Thomas Pando of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his wife Martha (nee McKalip) in 1984, by his parents James and Rachel (nee Doty) Pando, along with brothers Boris and Robert.
