Arnold "Joe" Zickefoose, 84, World War II Navy Veteran

Arnold “Joe” Zickefoose, age 84, of Lorain, died Saturday, October 28, 2006 at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph following an illness of one month. Mr. Zickefoose was born in Cubana, West Virginia (Randolph County) on August 15, 1922. He attended Daugherty Grade School and later graduated from Buckhannon Upshur High School. He had been a resident of Lorain County since 1950.

Mr. Zickefoose was a World War II Navy veteran. He attended Electrician’s Mate school in Newport, Rhode Island. Upon completion of training, he was commissioned as an Electricians Mate Second class and fulfilled duty assignments in that capacity aboard the USS Saugatuck and the USS New Kent. He was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with four Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of V.F.W. Post # 1070 in Elyria.

Following his separation from the military, Joe attended trade school in Chicago, Illinois and becaqme certified as a journeyman electrician. Following a short career in the construction industry, he joined the General Motors Corporation where he served for twenty-nine years at the former Fisher-Guide Division complex in Elyria.

In his free time Mr. Zickefoose enjoyed fishing, hunting and listening to country and western music.

He is survived by sisters Zita Lee of Buckhannon, West Virginia, and Donna Boone of Berea, brothers Paul of Elkins, West Virginia, Arthur of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Amal of Buckhannon, West Virginia, David residing in Pennsylvania, and Jerry “Dick” residing in Queens, West Virginia, ten nieces, and twelve nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Neva (nee Cottrell), by his second wife Cheryl Ann (nee Dina) in 2004, by his father Law Zickefoose in 1975, by his mother Virgie Zickefoose (nee Sloan) in 1994, by a brother Rex in 1998, and by a nephew Dennis Paul “P.J.”.

Visitation will be Monday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Dennis Henkle, pastor of Birmingham United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Garfield Cemetery, Sheffield Village were military honors will be conducted by the officers and members of V.F.W. Post # 1079 of Elyria.
