Frank J. Glavan, 82, US Veteran from World War II
Frank J. Glavan, 82, of Lorain, died Monday November 13, 2006 in the emergency room at Community Regional Medical Center in Lorain after a brief illness.He was born February 2, 1924 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Frank served with the US Navy during World War II in the elite armed guard division and achieved the rank of gunner’s mate third class. He was assigned to Merchant Marine vessels in convoys for protection during combat. He served aboard the SS Pennsylvania, SS Josiah G. Holland and the SS Russell A. Alger in the Asiatic Pacific, European Theatre and the American Theatre. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal.
Frank worked at the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company in Avon Lake in the shipping and receiving department for 34 years retiring in 1986.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church in Lorain, a life member of AMVETS Post #47 in Lorain, a member of the Armed Guard Veterans Unit and Project Liberty Ship. He enjoyed family activities, travel, engine repair and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Doris (nee Shay), daughter Mrs. John (Deb) Gelenius of Lorain, sons: Franklin Glavan of Huntsville, Alabama and Calvin Glavan of Bonita Springs, Florida, 2 grandchildren Kyle Gelenius and Kara Gelenius, 2 step grandchildren Rose Smith and Nikki Smith and one step great grandchild McKenzie. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Frances Glavan (nee Koschir), brother Joseph Glavan and sisters Josephine Peppy Trampush, Frances Gradisek, Ann Bickers, Mary Raynak and Stephana Nehls.
