Lorin M. Irish, 82, U.S. Coast Guard Port Security Specialist
Lorin Irish, age 82, of Sheffield Lake, died Thursday November 23, 2006 at the New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph following an extended illness. Lorin was born in Sebastopol, California on January 5, 1924 and had been a resident of Lorain County since 1945 coming from San Francisco.He was a veteran of the United States Coast Guard where he was attached to the Port Security Service for multiple periods of enlistment during World War II. Amongst his duty assignments was the protection of the Lorain lighthouse.
Following his honorable discharge from the military, he worked in a variety of vocations throughout the area including the maintenance departments for the Cities of Avon and Sheffield Lake, as a production assistant for the Lorain Stove Works and the Fruehauf Trailer Company, as an equipment operator for the T.J. Hume Company, and as a forklift operator in the seamless mills at U.S. Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works. He most recently was employed as a driver and warehouseman for Caster’s Foods of Sheffield Lake.
Mr. Irish was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Lorain; in his free time he enjoyed woodcarving and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-nine years June (nee Thompson), sons Loren Dennis Irish of Sheffield Lake and George Irish of Lorain, by daughters Linda D. McKee and Ann Marie Hess both of Lorain, Rachel Rupert of Amherst, twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, sisters Gwen Houghton of San Carlos, California, Marjorie Kiel of Windsor, California, Georgette Stewart of Santa Rosa, California, and Georgianna McCollum of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and a brother Lionel Irish of Santa Rosa, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Marguerite (nee Binning) Irish, by brothers George and John, by twin brothers Gary and Douglas, by sisters Daphne Irish, Bernadette Irish, and Clara Crockett, along with a grandson Allen Hess.
