Elizabeth J. Merrill, 72, Co-Owner of Arrow and City Cab Companies

Elizabeth J. “Betty” Merrill, (nee Mihalik), age 72, of Lorain, died Saturday November 25, 2006 at her residence. She was born in Belle Valley, Ohio on September 30, 1934 and had been a resident of Lorain since her childhood.

Betty attended Lorain High School. She and her late husband, Fred T. Merrill were the owner-operators of the Arrow Cab Company formerly based in south Lorain as well as the City Cab Company formerly based at the loop in downtown Lorain. The entity provided taxi service to the residents of Lorain and the surrounding community for more than three decades.

She later worked as a customer service representative at the Convenient Food Mart franchises located on East 42nd Street in Lorain and North Leavitt Road in Amherst for several years.

Mrs. Merrill was an avid participant in league bowling and had served as the secretary of the Tuesday Night League at North Coast Shoreway Lanes for more than twenty years. She had previously sat on the Board of Directors of the Lorain Bowling Association.

In her free time Betty enjoyed flower gardening, taking care of her yard, and spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son Michael Merrill of Elyria, daughters Victoria Kayatin-Szilvasy and Carol McDermott both of Lorain, Janet Moore of Hockley, Texas, DeAnna Peacock of Amherst, eight grandchildren, and brothers John A. Mihalik and Allen Mihalik both of Elyria, William Mihalik of Amherst, and Andrew Mihalik of Lorain.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred T. Merrill in 2003, by her parents John and Susan (nee Endrick) Mihalik, grandsons Tyler Peacock and Thomas Looney, brothers: Steven, Joseph, Thomas, along with sisters Mary Wilhelm, Margaret Mihalik, Martha Ciesla, & Helen Lockhart.
