Ethel M. Fertalj, 78, US Army Veteran, Substitute Teacher in Lorain Elementary Schools
Ethel M. Fertalj (nee Wyvill), 78, of Amherst, died Wednesday January 10, 2007 at her home after a long illness.She was born January 2, 1929 in Cleveland and had resided in Amherst since 1999 moving from Lorain.
Ethel was a graduate of Lorain High School class of 1947 B. She attended Bowling Green State University where she studied elementary education.
Ethel served with the US Women’s Army Corps during the Korean War and was stationed at Camp Zama in Japan. She received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
She was a substitute teacher in Lorain city elementary schools for many years.
Ethel was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Lorain and a former member of the church choir and Women’s Guild. She enjoyed playing the piano and taking family pictures.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years John Fertalj of Amherst, daughters: Mary A. Fertalj of Amherst, Judith L. Callahan of Lorain, Kathryn J. Torres of Lakewood and Margaret L. Wood of Lorain, grandchildren Peter Torres, Michael Torres, Keith Wood, Craig Wood, Patrick Callahan, Theresa Callahan and Corey Callahan, sisters: Roberta J. Lampe of Jacksonville, Florida, Carrie J. Barton of Avon Lake and Alberta R. Netzer of Titusville, Florida and brother Thomas W. Wyvill of Amherst. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter Diana R. Fertalj, parents Thomas & Ethel Wyvill (nee Alexander) and brother Kenneth R. Wyvill.
The family will receive friends Sunday 4-8 PM at the Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 309 7th St., Lorain. The Rev. Daniel O. Divis, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
