Arthur A. Monskie, 87, of Lorain, died Thursday January 18, 2007 at Southwest Regional Hospital in Ft. Myers, Florida after a sudden illness.He was born February 16, 1919 in Scranton, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain since 1961.
Arthur served with the US Navy and US Naval Fleet Reserve as a chief petty officer during World War II and the Korean War. He served for over 21 years before retiring and was stationed aboard the USS New York, USS Surprise, USS Bazely, USS Europa, USS WT Powell, USS Cony, USS Kyne, USS Howard W. Gilmore, USS Petrol, USS Hermitage and the USS Miller. He was also stationed at the Naval Advanced Base in Bremerhaven, Germany from 1946-1948, Frederick, Maryland from 1950-1952 and at the USNTC in Great Lakes, Illinois from 1959-1961 where he was a teaching instructor and leadership instructor.
Arthur worked as an electrician at the Ford Assembly Plant in Lorain for 15 years retiring in 1984.
He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #451 of Lorain and a member of Lorain Liedertafel for over 20 years. Arthur enjoyed bowling and participated in the Thursday Senior League at Rebman Recreation for many years. He was an avid photographer.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years Elfriede (nee Schmidt), daughters: Marietta Korinko of Amherst and Susan Shlapack of Baltimore, Maryland, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren and brothers Harold Monskie of Inkster, Michigan and Ernest Monskie of Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents Leon & Emma Monskie (nee Gadat), brothers Walter Monskie and Norman Monskie and sister Lucille Kay.
The family will receive friends Friday 4-8 PM at the Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where memorial services will be held Saturday at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Mr. Robert J. Dybo, deacon of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain, will officiate.
