Hilda A. Jakubec, 82, Active In Croatian Fraternal Affairs

Hilda A. Jakubec, (nee Furjanic), age 82, of Lorain, died Wednesday January 24, 2007 in the emergency room of Community Health Partners Hospital & Surgical Center following a brief illness.

Mrs. Jakubec was born in Lorain on December 28, 1924 and had been a life-long resident of the city.

Hilda attended Lorain High School. She was formerly employed at the Lorain Stove Works during World War II and later worked as a sales associate for Karnick's Variety Store which was formerly located at the corner of East 31st Street and Broadway Avenue.

Hilda was an active parishioner of Saint Vitus Catholic Church in Lorain; active in Croatian fraternal pursuits, she was a member of Saint Teresa's Guild as well as Croatian Catholic Union Lodge # 17.

She was also a member of the Lorain T.O.P.S. Organization, the Lorain Salvation Army Keenagers, and served as a volunteer with the Lorain County Board of Elections. During the 1960s she competed in league bowling competition throughout the area as a member of the team sponsored by Lorain County Sheriff Vernon Smith. She was a charter member of the Stitch-N-Bitch Craft Club of Lorain and was also well known for her portrayal of Santa Claus at holiday gatherings. Mrs. Jakubec was also an avid fan of both the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians professional sports teams.

Survivors include three sons: Kevin R. Jakubec and Mark E. Jakubec both of Lorain, Raymond M. Jakubec of Little River, South Carolina, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, as well as her sister Barbara Kozar of Lorain.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward in 1996, by her parents Blaz and Magdalene (nee Chalovich) Furjanic, and by sisters Katherine Kobasic, Mary Furjanic, and Dianne Furjanic in infancy.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway where a parish rosary will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday beginning with closing prayers at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of her funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Vitus Catholic Church 1793 East 32nd Street in Lorain. The Reverend Simon Nekic, pastor of Saint Vitus Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery Lorain.
