Donald J. Schweinberg, 82, US Navy Veteran, US Steel Retiree

Donald J. Schweinberg, 82, of Lorain, died Sunday March 18, 2007 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a one-year illness.

He was born August 8, 1924 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

While in high school, Don worked at the Lorain Journal and the Q House (billiards) before graduating from Lorain High School with the 1942-B class.

He served with the US Navy during World War II as a signal man aboard the cruiser Omaha. He participated in patrol duty in the South Atlantic, which included convoy duty from Receife, Brazil to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He served time aboard the Brazilian cruiser Baha as a signal man to help with communications between the Brazilian and American ships in the convoy. After 2 years over seas he returned to the United States and was assigned to duty as a submarine net tender in the Boston harbor.

Donald worked at US Steel in Lorain as a Workload Planner Supervisor in the shipping department for 37 years retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain, Senior Fellowship, Black River Trailblazers Camping Group of Lorain and the Buckeye Rovers Camping Club in Cadiz. He was a volunteer at Lorain Community Hospital for over 22 years. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed traveling having visited all 50 states.

He is survived by his wife of 61years Jean L. Schweinberg (nee Penson), son Paul K. Schweinberg of Amherst, daughter Donna L. Cameron of Conway, Arkansas, 3 granddaughters and 1 great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents William & Anna Schweinberg (nee Gossman), brothers Earl Schweinberg and William Schweinberg and sister Lillian Hudak.

The family will receive friends Thursday, March 22, 2007 from 5-8 PM at Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Private family funeral services will be held. Burial will be held in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
