Henry T. Garcia, 79, Lorain Veteran-of-the-Year, IBEW Retiree
Henry T. Garcia, 79, of Lorain, died Tuesday, March 20, 2007 at Community Regional Medical Center in Lorain after a lengthy illness.He was born May 12, 1927 in Franklin, New Jersey and had resided in Lorain most of his life.
Henry served with the US Navy during World War II as a Coxswain and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and American Area Campaign Medal.
Henry worked as an Electrician with IBEW Local #129 in Lorain for over 40 years retiring in 1992. Prior to that he worked at Nelson Stud and AMSHIP, both in Lorain.
He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, Polish Legion of American Veterans Post #38, American Legion Post #20, Moose Club, Elks Lodge, Croatian Club, Polish American Citizens Club and American Slovak Club, all of Lorain.
Henry was a Senior Vice Commander & Commander of the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post #38 and was a past Lorain Veterans Council Veteran-of-the-Year.
He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years Nancy A. Garcia (nee Fundak), son Robert Garcia of Lorain, daughters: Denise Garcia-Myers, Valerie Morales and Joyce Wilhelm, all of Lorain, 9 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, brothers Joseph Garcia and Florentino Garcia both of Lorain, sister Marlene Garza of Lorain and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by son Terry Garcia in infancy and parents Florentino Frank and Frances Garcia (nee Flaczynski).
The family will receive friends Thursday 2-4, 7-9 PM at the Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 AM followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3501 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Charles Henkle, associate pastor, will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW Post #451 & American Legion Post #20, both of Lorain. Cremation will follow.
