Katherine 'Kate' Mlakar, 94, Sang In Ss. Cyril & Methodius Choir
Katherine Kate Mlakar, (nee Nekic), age 94, of Amherst, and formerly of Lorain, died Friday April 6, 2007 at her residence following an extended illness.Mrs. Mlakar was born in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania on May 10, 1912 and moved to Lorain, Ohio in 1917. She had been a resident of Amherst for the past year.
A former Block Warden during World War II, Kate was formerly employed as a sales associate for the J.C. Penney Company and later in a similar capacity by Karnik’s Variety Store of Lorain.
She was a parishioner of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Lorain where she was a member of the church choir for many years. She was also active in Slovenian Fraternal Affairs and was a member of K.S.K.J. Lodge # 85 as well as the Buckeye Lodge of the A.M.L.A.
In her free time she enjoyed baking and was especially known for her strudel. Additional interests included playing cards, following the exploits of the Cleveland Indians, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include daughters Dorothy Myosky of Amherst and Kathleen Karnak of Olmsted Township, son Joseph Mlakar, D.D.S. currently residing in Fort Wayne, Indiana, seventeen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and her sister Ann Perritt of Elyria.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph in 1993, by her parents Matt and Anna (nee Dragevic) Nekic, by a sister Rose Doslovic, and by her brother Jacob Nekic.
Visitation will be Tuesday, April 10, 2007, from 5:00 9:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Avenue Lorain where a parish rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday beginning with closing prayers offered in the funeral chapel at 9:30 a.m. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. in Ss Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church 1705 East 31st, Street - Lorain with the Reverend Paul Krajnik, pastor of the parish officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery Lorain.
