John J. Golowenski, 77, Sears Appliance Repairman, Active in Church

John J. Golowenski, 77, of Lorain, died Thursday April 12, 2007 at his home after a long illness.

He was born February 3, 1930 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident. He attended St. Mary Academy in Lorain.

John worked for Sears as an appliance repairman retiring in 1985. Prior to that he worked at Falencki Hardware and US Steel.

He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain where he taught PSR classes, was an RCIA team member and did repairs around the church and school. He was a past member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain and a past member of it’s Holy Name Society where he served as president.

John was active with the Catholic Civil Rights movement and the Cursillo Group. He actively wrote letters to the editor of the Morning Journal.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Dorothy (nee Recznik), sons: David Golowenski of Sunbury, Ohio, John Golowenski and Robert Golowenski, both of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, daughters: Janet Baxter of Lorain, Elaine Berstling of Sheffield Village, Karen Golowenski of Flagstaff, Arizona, Dorothy Ralls of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Lynne Kramer, Michelle Holbrook and Renee Golowenski, all of Lorain, 29 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Diane Thompson in 2006, father John A. Golowenski, mother Frances Golowenski-Krawczyk (nee Terencz), brothers Edward Golowenski, Joseph Golowenski and Benjamin Golowenski and sister Rose Gerron.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 17, 2007, from 6-9 PM at the Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9:30 AM in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Charles Henkle, associate pastor of the Catholic Church of St. Peter in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
