Anna B. Szalay, 89, Clearview Booster & Hall Of Fame Inductee

Anna B. Szalay, (nee Caco), age 89, of Sheffield Township, died Wednesday May 9, 2007 in the emergency room of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center.

Mrs. Szalay was born in Lorain on July 25, 1917 and remained a life-long resident of the community. She was a graduate of Clearview High School as a member of the Class of 1935.

She was employed as a cashier in the cafeteria at Clearview High School for many years and retired from that position in 1987 following a career that spanned nearly a quarter of a century with the school district. She had previously been employed for ten years by the Worthington Golf Ball Company of Elyria.

Anna was extremely active within the Clearview Schools serving as a member and Past President of both the Durling and Clearview High School Parent Teacher Organizations. She was also a former member of the Clearview Band Boosters. She and her late husband, Frank, were probably most well known for their work with Clearview athletics. She served as a member and Treasurer of the Clearview Athletic Boosters for twenty-nine years and was a familiar face in the ticket booths at varsity football and basketball games. Her hard work was acknowledged with induction into the Clearview Hall of Fame and by the re-dedication of the high school’s gymnasium in she and her spouse’s names at ceremonies conducted earlier this year.

Mrs. Szalay was an active parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain where she was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society, the Ladies Guild, and the Holy Trinity Seniors’ Club. She also served as a Eucharistic Minister at the church for many years. She was a member of National Slovak Society Branch # 160.

In her free time, Anna enjoyed cooking and crocheting.

Survivors include daughters Suzanne Hammond of Amherst, Mary Helen Trent of Lorain, sons Frank B. Szalay of Sheffield Village and John A. Szalay of Lorain, ten grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and by sisters Pauline Sackett and Agnes Dane Brezina both of Lorain, and Dorothy Zimmerman of Sheffield Township.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank J. Szalay in 1999, by her parents John and Helen (nee Tomcho) Caco, by brothers William and John Caco, and by sisters Cecelia Horomanski, Veronica Solak, and Helen Korp.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 13, 2007, from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue - Lorain where a rosary service will be conducted by offciers and members of the Holy Trinity Altar & Roasry Society at 3:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday beginning with closing prayers offered in the funeral chapel at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by the celebration of her funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Trinity Catholic Church – 2428 Elyria Avenue – Lorain. The Reverend David A. Novak, Pastor of Holy Trinity Parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery – Lorain.
