Anthony T. Piwinski, 87, Iron Rigger
Anthony T. Piwinski, 87 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Monday, June 11, 2007 at Welcome Nursing Home in Oberlin following a six month illness.He was born June 12, 1919 in Cleveland. Anthony has been a lifetime resident of Henrietta Township.
Anthony served in the US Army in World War II serving in the Normandy Invasion, D-Day and the European African Middle Easter Theater where he received the Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal with two bronze stars. He was employed as a Iron Rigger at the American Shipbuilding for many years. Anthony was a member of Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Church in South Amherst. He was a member of the United Polish Club in Elyria and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Grafton.
Survivors include his sons Anthony S. Piwinski of Elyria, Walter C. Piwinski of Oberlin, Donald A. Piwinski of LaGrange; his daughter Suzanne M. Szalkiewicz of South Amherst; four grandchildren; his brother Stan Piwinski of Oberlin; his sister Sophie Diedrick of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years Ruth C. Piwinski (nee: Krueck) in 2002; his granddaughter Jena Rose Piwinski; his sisters Stella Godfried, Clara Deery, Theresa Towne; and by his parents Thomas and Helana Piwinski (nee: Zglimizka).
Friends may call Wednesday, June 13, 2007 from 4-7 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst. Closing prayers will be held Thursday, Jun e 14,2 007 at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. from Nativity BVM Catholic Church, 333 South Lake Street, South Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Denis St. Marie, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Camden Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, P.O. Box 124, Kipton, OH 414049.
