Robert George Maurer, 69, Life Long Vermilion Resident

Photo of Robert George  Maurer Robert George Maurer, 69 of Vermilion, died Sunday, June 24, 2007 at his home after a sudden illness.

He was born December 29, 1937 in Sandusky, Ohio and has been a life long Vermilion resident. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Korea.

Mr. Maurer was a 1964 graduate of the Ohio State University. He earned a BS in agricultural education. He taught for 2 years in Edgertown, Ohio then worked for 2 years as a chemical representative for Chevron Chemical before moving back to the family farm. For 41 years he farmed with his family then later owned and operated Maurer Farms in Vermilion. His operation included dairy farming, chemical, seed and machinery sales, a grain elevator and most recently grain farming of about 3000 acres.

He was a member of Vermilion United Church of Christ Congregational and a member of Ely Lodge #424 and the Ohio Farm Bureau. He was a supervisor for the Erie County Board of Soil and Water Conservation where he received a commendation from the Ohio State House of Representatives. He was a life member of AMVETS Post #22, Vermilion.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth (nee: Strittmather); 3 sons, Thomas G. Maurer of Vermilion, Russell E. Maurer of Avon Lake, and Steven S. Maurer of Colorado Springs, CO; 2 step grandchildren, Kalan and Zack MacKenzie; 2 brothers, Gary Maurer of Wakeman and James Maurer of Vermilion; a sister, Donna Campbell of New London, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Hazel (nee: Berk) Maurer.

Friends may call Thursday, June 28, 2007 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio, where Ely Lodge #424 will conduct a Masonic Service at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at the Riddle Funeral Home, Friday, June 30, 2007, at 11 a.m., the Reverend Wendell Brooker, pastor of United Church of Christ Congregational, officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion where the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
