Mathew T. Haller, 86, US Steel Retiree, Active in Fast Pitch Softball
Mathew T. Haller, 86, of Lorain, died Friday, June 29, 2007 at Community Regional Medical Center in Lorain after a long illness.He was born in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain resident.
Mathew attended St. Anthony School, Longfellow School and the Lincoln Institute in Cleveland.
He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Oregon and worked on Lake Freighters before serving in the US Army during World War II. He was a staff sergeant with the 234th Signal Corp. He was the 4th son of a 5 Star Mother meaning his four brothers also were serving their country during World War II.
Mathew worked at US Steel in Lorain in production planning for 36 years retiring in 1976.
He was a member of St. Vitus Catholic Church in Lorain and was active in Lorain Fastpitch Softball leagues playing for the US Steel Pipe Mill Loaders team.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and sports.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years Anna Haller (nee Nazarkiewicz), daughter Barbara R. Nichols of Sheffield Village, son Matthew M. Haller of Vermilion, sister Katherine Udovic of Lorain, brothers George Haller of Lorain and Paul Haller of Amherst, 3 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Ruth Haller in 1956, parents Joseph & Mary Haller (nee Alexa), sister Ann Bandersky and brothers Thomas Haller, Steven Haller, John Haller and Joseph Haller.
The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 12:00 p.m. at the Gluvna Shimo Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Simon Nekic, pastor of St. Vitus Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
