Paul J. Miller, Sr., 90, Decorated WW II Navy Veteran / Stanadyne Retiree

Paul J. Miller, Sr., age 90, of Elyria, and formerly of Lorain, died Thursday August 2, at the Abbewood Care Center in Elyria.

He was born in Mingo Junction, Ohio on January 13, 1917 and had been a resident of Lorain County since 1936 coming from Jefferson County. Mr. Miller was a graduate of Clearview High School.

Paul enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served as a Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class in the Pacific Theater. He was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with one Bronze Star as well as the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star.

He was employed as a machinist and assembler by the Stanadyne Corporation of Elyria and subsequently in the same capacity by its successor company Moen, Inc. He retired in 1979 following forty-three years of service with the manufacturer.

Mr. Miller was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain and was a member of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans. A former member of the Happy Travelers Club, he enjoyed league bowling with the Lorain Senior Citizens’ League at Rebman’s Recreation. Additional interest included watching televised news and televised sporting events.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years Cecelia (nee Urda), sons Raymond of Adrian, Michigan, Robert of Stanley, North Carolina, and Paul, Jr. of Elyria, five grandchildren, four step grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and three step great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Elizabeth (nee Koches) Miller, and by three sisters and two brothers.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday beginning with closing prayers in the funeral chapel at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church – 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria Township. The Reverend James Ols, Pastor of Saint Vincent de Paul Church will officiate. Burial will follow n Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, where military honors will be conducted by the officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
