Dr. Jack Kernohan, 73, Optometrist - Philanthropist
Dr. Jack Kernohan, O. D. 73 of Lorain died Tuesday, August 14, 2007 in Cleveland Clinic Hospital, Cleveland following a brief illness.He was born May 16, 1934 in Cleveland. He graduated from Rhodes High School in 1952. He moved to Lorain after he graduated. He also graduated from Ohio State University College of Optometry in 1957. During that time he was an active member of Lambda Chi Optometry fraternity.
He served in the U. S. Army. He was stationed in Japan in communications.
Dr. Kernohan owned and operated West Lawn Optical in Amherst past 40 years. Prior to that he did research for Bausch and Lomb.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of Black River Lodge 786 Lorain. Dr. Kernohan in 1992 was a past President of the Lorain County Shrine Club. He earned a Million Dollar Pin by single handedly raising money for Shriners Burn Hospital for Children. Dr Kernohan was also a past president of the Lorain Jaycees and in 1976 a past president of the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame. He was a life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Mullen- Murray Post 453 and a member of the Amvets post 47 both of Lorain and the Lorain Lions Club. Dr. Kernohan served a Democrat Committee Man of the 8th Ward, Lorain. He was a contributing member of Saint Peter Church, Lorain. He was an avid sportsman, he was a 50 year member and was a past vice president of the Beaver Creek Club., enjoying snow skiing, golf, fishing, hunting, scuba diving. He also taught hunting and gun safety to children.
Among the survivors are his wife of 26 years Margaret "Peggy" Kernohan (nee Bisgrove) of Lorain; sons David Loudon Kernohan of Jacksonville, Florida, John Jay and Mark Willard Kernohan both of Amherst, James Campbell Kernohan of Boston, Massachusetts and Matthew Carl Kernohan of Columbus, Ohio and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jack in 1968 and Jennie (nee Sudworth) Kernohan in 1982 and a sister Nan Hawk (Kernohan) in 1982.
Friends may call Friday, August 17, 2007, 4:00 to 9:00 pm in The Catholic Church of Saint Peter, 3501 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. A funeral mass for Jack will be there Saturday, August 18, 2007 at 10:00 AM. Rev. Charles W. Bisgrove S. C. J. of Eluru, India, will preside and Ken Wolnowsky, pastor will concelebrate. Burial will be private.
