Michael Dziat, 89, Battle of Midway Veterans
Michael Dziat, age 89, of Lorain, died Sunday September 2, 2007 at the Ohio Veterans Home following an extended illness.Mr. Dziat was born in Lakewood, Ohio on November 15, 1917 and had been a resident of Lorain for most of his life.
From 1932 through 1936 he participated extensively in Golden Gloves boxing competition throughout the region.
He later enlisted in the United States Navy where he served in the Pacific Theater. He fulfilled duty assignments as a Gunner’s Mate aboard the USS Kendall Campbell and was a participant in a variety of battle campaigns including the Battle of Midway. He was the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with four Bronze Stars, The Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mike was employed as a shipper-dispatcher for the United States Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; he retired in 1977 after a career that spanned forty-one years with the steel producer.
He was an avid outdoorsman whose interests included hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his son Michael J. Dziat, of Wakeman, daughters Carolyn Dennis of Lorain and Noreen Dziat of Tucson, Arizona, six grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a sister Julia Rosta residing in Milan, Ohio.
He was preceded in by his parents Michael and Barbara (nee Pastuk) Dziat, sisters Mary Yacyszyn and Ann Muffley, and by his brother Peter Dziat.
Visitation will be Friday, September 7, 2007, from 6:00 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the funeral chapel. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township where military honors will be conducted by the officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans, Lorain.
