Paul L. Erdy, Teacher, Coach, Sportsman

He suffered a paralyzing stroke 8 years ago after an ice hockey accident and had resided at the Ohio Veteran's Home in Sandusky for the last 5 years.

He graduated from Lorain High School in 1952, served 4 years in the US Air Force, received a Bachelor's degree from Ohio University and a Master's degree from Rutgers University.

As a career, he taught high school math and coached high school sports. He coached some basketball and always football. He taught and coached at Firelands High School, Keystone High School and North Ridgeville High School where he also served as athletic director for several years.

Paul participated in organized sports while growing up lettering in track, basketball, and football at Irving Junior High School; track, basketball and football at Lorain High School; and football at Ohio University. In college he played 4 years as a lineman, lettering the last 2 years, and was co-captain his final year. In recognition of his contribution to area sports, he was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

Paul's leisure activities revolved around sports. He liked to fish, especially on Lake Erie, bowled, golfed, and played recreational hockey. He enjoyed food, always had a vegetable garden, loved to explore out-of-the-way, unique restaurants, and cooked for family and friends.

Paul is survived by his wife Virginia (Mramor), daughter Janet Elizabeth Menges, son Paul Joseph, 3 grandchildren, sisters Irene (Suz) Virant, Elizabeth (Libby) Maiden, and Lois Konsevick. He was preceded in death by his parents George Erdy and Elizabeth (Solon) Erdy, brothers George, Joseph, Lawrence (Ham), Alvin (Jim), and sister Veronica Sulpizio.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 9th at 4 p.m. followed by a celebratory buffet at DeLuca's Place in the Park, 6075 Middle Ridge Road in Lorain. The Reverend Carl Richter, senior pastor of the First Congregational United Church of Christ will officiate. All who knew him and the family are welcome.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of choice.
