John J. Karnai, 89, US Steel Retiree, Enjoyed Woodworking & Gardening

Photo of John J. Karnai John J. Karnai, 89, of Lorain, died Thursday September 20, 2007 at his home after suffering an apparent heart attack.

He was born February 2, 1918 in Martins Ferry, Ohio and had resided in Lorain since childhood.

John served with the US Army during World War II in the South Pacific in Luzon, the Northern Solomons and Bismarck Archipelago. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon w/3 Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation w/1 Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal.

John worked at US Steel in Lorain as a crane operator for 43 � years retiring in 1980.

As a youth he played sandlot baseball and football in Lorain and was an avid sports fan of all Cleveland teams.

John was a member of the St. Lads Athletic Club and a life member of VFW #451 of Lorain. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

He is survived by his daughters Sandra Majoras of Amherst Township and Shirley Ravis of Lorain, sons Alexander Ravis of Vermilion and Timothy Ravis of Haughton, Louisiana, 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and brothers Julius Karnai of Massillon and Elek Karnai of Canton. He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine Karnai (nee Hellinger) in 1999, parents John and Mary Karnai (nee Szucs) and brother Arthur Karnai.

The family will receive friends Sunday 2-4, 7-9 PM at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Mr. Robert J. Dybo, deacon of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township.
