Herbert E. Sullivan, 82, Retired New York Central Conductor

Mr. Sullivan was born in Shelby, Michigan on May 3, 1925 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1956. He had previously resided in Elyria.

He was a World War II veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a Gunner’s Mate Third Class aboard the U.S.S. Wyoming. He was awarded the American Area Ribbon along with the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Sullivan was a member and past commander of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans in Lorain.

He was employed as a conductor for the New York Central Railroad Company where he fulfilled duty assignments at the Fairlane Rail Yard. He retired from that position in 1965. He was associated with the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees Unit # 144.

Following his retirement from the railroad, he and his wife established the A and H Ceramic and China Painting Studio subsequently retiring permanently in 2001.

A member of Elyria Lodge # 787 F. & A.M., he enjoyed golf and gardening in his free time.

Herb is survived by his wife of fifty years Ann E. (nee Yurkovic), by brothers Mac and John Sullivan both residing in Hart, Michigan, and by Robert of Muskegon, Michigan, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Lavina (nee Stewart) Sullivan and by brothers Raymond and Leroy.

Friends may call Monday, October 2, 2007, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Mr. John Sullivan, brother of the decedent officiating. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township where military honors will be conducted by the officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
