William D. Young, Sr., 83, # 4 Seamless Mill Retiree
William D. Young, Sr., age 83, of Lorain, died Thursday October 11, 2007 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice, following a brief illness.Mr. Young was born in Lorain on October 17, 1923 and remained a life-long resident of the city.
He was a graduate of Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1941-B. Following his graduation, Mr. Young enlisted in the United States Navy. He completed his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Installation in Illinois and then went on to receive specialized training and a Certificate In Electonics at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He served as an Aviation Electrician's Mate Second Class and fulfilled duty assignments in Panama, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the American Area Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.
Following his completion of military service, Bill returned to Lorain where he joined the National Tube Company, predecessor to United States Steel Corporation where he worked as an electrician in the # 4 Seamless Mill. He retired in 1986 following a career that spanned forty-two years with the steel producer. He was a long-time member of United Steelworkers Local # 1104.
He was a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain. A health and physical fitness enthusiast, Bill enjoyed fishing and boating in his free time. Additional interests included reading, following the Cleveland Indians, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-nine years Margaret (nee Ockajik), son William D. Young, Jr. of Lorain, daughters Janice M. Young and Joyce S. Tillack both of Lorain, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents William R. Young and Florence (nee Schmidt) Young, and by sisters Louise Boracz, Caroline Frey, Lillian Post, Lucetta Thiel, and Odelia F. Berki.
Visitation will be Sunday, October 14, 2007 from 4:00 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. in Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, East 33rd and Pearl Avenue, with the Reverend Laurie Miller, Pastor of the church presiding. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill memorial park, Amherst Township.
The family encourages memorial contributions to either Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church or New Life Hospice.
