Wayne C. Schafer, 78, US Steel Retiree, Korean War Veteran

He was born September 21, 1929 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Wayne attended Lorain High School and later earned his GED. He served with the US Army during the Korean War and was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Korean Service Medal w/1 Bronze Camp Star and the United Nations Service Medal.
Wayne worked at US Steel in Lorain as a crane operator and metallurgist before retiring.
He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, a life member of AMVETS Post #47 where he served as adjutant for 7 years, a life member of VFW #451, a member of American Legion #30 and a member of the Lorain Bowling Association, Moose Club and Elks Club, all in Lorain.
Wayne enjoyed league and tournament bowling and playing golf. He enjoyed traveling with his family and pet dog Tiger.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Louise Schafer (nee Hoczko), daughters Michelle Schafer of San Diego, California and Annette Deir of Painesville, grandchildren Emilie Deir and Wayne and great granddaughter Chasity. He was preceded in death by his son Wayne C. Schafer, Jr. in 2003, parents Halbert Schafer, Sr. and Verla Schafer (nee Luton) and brother Halbert Schafer, Jr.
The family will receive friends Wednesday 4-8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 am in the funeral chapel with the Rev. James Debrason, deacon of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain, officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
