Russell Brown, 84, Highly Decorated WW II Naval Veteran

Russell Brown, age 84, of Amherst, died Saturday December 8, 2007 at Community Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Mr. Brown was born in Rocky River, Ohio on July 8, 1923 and had been a resident of Lorain County since 1957 and a resident of Amherst since February of this year.

Russ attended Rocky River High School; he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943 and served as a Seaman First Class aboard the USS New Jersey and USS Solace in the Pacific Theater. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with Nine Bronze Stars, the Philippine Liberation Medal with Two Bronze Stars, the American Area medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was employed as a driver for the Mitchell Transportation Division of Leaseway Trucking; he retired from the position in 1987. He had previously been employed as the plant supervisor for the former FastWay Fastener Corporation of Lorain.

Mr. Brown was an avid sports enthusiast who closely followed the Cleveland Browns, Indians, and Cavaliers professional sports franchises. He also participated in league bowling competition at both the Aquamarine and Shoreway Lanes

He was a member of the United Teamsters Union Local 436 of Cleveland as well as the Lorain Polish-American Citizens Club.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-nine years Aileen B. (nee Ream), sons Russell R. Brown of Lagrange, Kentucky and Bill Brown of Akron, daughter Karen Whitten of Amherst, two grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and by a sister Florence Colpert of Westlake.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Deborah Ann Brown in 1955, by his parents James and Catherine (nee Atchison) Brown, along with three brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Family graveside services will be conducted Wednesday in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township where the officers and members of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans will conduct military honors.
