George Vargo, 83, U.S. Steel Shipping Department Retiree

George Vargo, Sr., age 83, of Lorain, died Thursday December 27, 2007 at his residence following a brief illness.

Mr. Vargo was born in Steubenville, Ohio on August 7, 1924 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1945.

He was a World War II Veteran serving with the United States Navy; he fulfilled duty assignments as a Machinist’s Mate in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of War.

He was employed as a shipper at United States Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works retiring in 1986 following forty years of service with the steel producer.

He was a long-time member of United Steelworkers Local # 1104.

A member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lorain, George formerly served as a member of the Lorain Emergency Police. An avid fan of both the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians professional sports teams, he was formerly active as a coach in the Lorain Little League as well as the Lorain City Baseball League.

A life member of the American Slovak Club of Lorain, he enjoyed vegetable gardening.

Survivors include his sons George Vargo, Junior of Lorain, and Terry “Whitey” Vargo of Amherst Township, step-son John Adams of Vermilion, four grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and sisters Ellen Varney of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania and Margaret Shimko of Canton, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife Agnes J. (nee Adams) Vargo in 2004, by his parents George and Susan (nee Novak) Vargo, by a brother Andy, and a sister Susan Polochan.
