Mark J. Mehal, 41, Teacher and Sports Enthusiast

Photo of Mark J. Mehal Mark J. Mehal, age 41, of Lorain, died Monday January 21, 2008 at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation following a brief illness.

Mark was born in Lorain on September 1, 1966 and had been a life-long resident of the city.

He was a graduate of Southview High School as a member of the Class of 1985. He went on to attend Ashland University where he obtained his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in education.

Since 2005 Mr. Mehal has been employed as a fifth grade teacher and Assistant Principal at Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parochial School in Avon. He had previously served as an eighth grade teacher at Saint Vincent de Paul Parochial School in Elyria Township. He had also formerly served as the Junior Varsity basketball coach at Lorain Catholic High School.

He was a parishioner of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Mark was a sports enthusiast and widely known as an ardent fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was also a follower of the New York Yankees.

He is survived by his wife of nine years Beth A. (nee Lucey), daughter Madison Mehal at home, sisters Judy Fritsch of Elyria and Lori Matos of Lorain, and by brothers Rich Mehal of Lorain and Michael of Canton, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents Francis and Margaret (nee Shumaker) Mehal.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 - 9:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 North Ridge Road, Elyria Township. The Reverend James Ols, Pastor of Saint Vincent de Paul Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

The family encourages memorial contributions to either the Madison Mehal Fund in care of any branch of First Federal Savings of Lorain or to Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 North Ridge Rd., Elyria, OH 44035.
