Harold E. Smith, 90, Silver Beaver Award Winner

Photo of Harold E. Smith Harold E. Smith died peacefully at Community Regional Medical Center on Thursday February 7th, 2008. He was 90 years of age at the time of his passing.

Mr. Smith was a graduate of Lorain High School as a member of the Class of 1935-B. He went on to serve in the United States Army fulfilling duty assignments with the 6th Battalion Field Artillery Detachment at Fort Sill, Oklahoma during World War II. He was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

He spent his working career as a repairman, delivery man, and sales associate for the Delis Furniture Company of Lorain. He was later employed in the maintenance department of Central Trust Bank.

His love in life was his wife, Elsie, and they worked diligently together in areas of community service and a variety of hobbies. Mr. Smith earned the prestigious Silver Beaver Award for his volunteer efforts with the Firelands Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed building floats for the Central Trust Company that appeared in Lorain’s International Festivals and also spent many hours hand carving model ships and assisting his wife with her passion for ceramics.

A parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, he worked for many years on the reunion committee of his high school class and enjoyed playing the role of Santa Claus at Scout functions and family gatherings.

He is survived by his son Joseph and his wife Anne (nee McLaughlin) of Avon, by grandchildren Stephanie and Anthony Smith, sisters Josephine Jameson and Constance Mathewson both of Lorain, sister-in-law Gertrude DiNunzio also of Lorain along with nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie (nee DiNunzio) in 2006, and by his parents Joseph and Mary M. (nee Tomasek) Smith.

Visitation will be Monday from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Nativity B.V.M. Catholic Church, 1454 Lexington Avenue. The Reverend Robert Glepko will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Resurrection Mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the officers and members of V.F.W. Post # 451 and American Legion Post # 30 both of Lorain.
