Earl C. Burgess, 81, Worked at AMSHIP

Earl C. Burgess, 81, of Lorain, died Tuesday February 26, 2008 at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Amherst after a long illness.

He was born July 9, 1926 in Greenup, Kentucky and had resided in the Lorain area for the past 47 years.

Earl served with the US Navy during World War II in Japan. He worked at American Ship Building in Lorain as a shipper for over 30 years. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and enjoyed playing golf, bowling and traveling.

He is survived by his daughter Cheryl Velazquez of Lorain, granddaughter Mrs. Otis (Zenaida) Velazquez-Jenkins of Lorain, grandson Isaac Velazquez of Lorain, 2 great granddaughters, brother Philip Burgess of Cincinnati and sisters Edna Burgess of Columbus and Pearl Staton of Ironton and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Opal L. Burgess (nee Pruitt) on January 11, 1994, parents Charles & Mabel Burgess (nee May), brothers Doug Burgess and Junior Burgess and sister Teresa Messlick.

The family will receive friends Saturday 5:00 pm until the time of funeral services at 7:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Bob Daugherty will officiate. Cremation will follow and the ashes will be interred at a later date in Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Franklin Furnace, Ohio.
