John J. Rakar, 94, Retired Letter Carrier for U.S. Postal Service
John J. Rakar, Sr., age 94, of Lorain, died Wednesday at the Kingston of Vermilion following a brief illness.Mr. Rakar was born in Brilliant, Ohio on April 9, 1913 and had been a resident of Lorain since childhood.
He was employed as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service fulfilling duty assignments out of Lorain’s Central Post Office. He retired in 1974 following more than thirty years of service. He formerly served as Treasurer for the National Association of Letter Carriers Credit Union and was also a member of the Audit Committee there.
John was an active parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and usher. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society of the church as well as the Holy Trinity Seniors Club.
Mr. Rakar was a former member of the Lorain Auxiliary Police. His hobbies included cultivating and growing roses, league bowling, gardening, and pets. Additional interests included football and following the Cleveland Indians.
He is survived by his daughter Anita Rakar of Lorain, daughter-in-law Lola Rakar (nee Arndt) of Vermilion, grandson Scott Rakar (Deborah) of Amherst, granddaughter-in-law Melissa Rakar of Erick, Oklahoma, an by great grandchildren Brittany, Nikolas, John J. Rakar, III, Tyler, Michael, and Jacob.
He was preceded in death by his wife Helen (nee Lisicky) in 2005, by a son John J. Rakar, Jr. in 1997, by a grandson Jon Rakar in 2004, by his parents Joseph and Susan (nee Gombita) Rakar, and by a sister Margaret Matejcik.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m.in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Trinity Catholic Church 2428 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend David A. Novak will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
