Donald J. Starr, Sr., 89, United States Navy Veteran
Donald J. Starr, Sr., age 89 of Lorain, died Thursday February 28, 2008 at Community Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Starr was born in Sewellsville, Ohio and was a graduate of Holloway High School; he had been a longtime resident of Lorain.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy where he served as a Fire Controlman First Class during both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He fulfilled duty assignments aboard a variety of vessels including the USS Sterett and the USS William R. Rush. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Ribbon, the American Area Ribbon, the American Defense Ribbon, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Area Ribbon with three Bronze Stars.
Mr. Starr was employed as an engineer for the Lake Terminal Railroad Company retiring in 1979 following thirty years of service.
He was a life member of VFW Post # 451, a life member of Amvets Post # 47, and a life member of American Legion Post # 30. He was also a past member of Lorain Moose Lodge # 552.
His hobbies included fishing and golf.
Survivors include his son Donald J. Starr, Jr. of Lorain, daughters Mrs. Willie (Sharon) Burgess of Crossville, Tennessee, Mrs. David (June) Bannick of Avon Lake, and Bonnie Starr of Vermilion along with six grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Sara A. Starr (nee McCammon) in 2005 and by his parents Victor and Ethel (nee Frizzel) Starr.
Visitation will be Monday from 4 - 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Richard Henry, Pastor of Amherst Church of the Nazarene presiding. Entombment will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens where joint military honors will be conducted by VFW Post #451 and American Legion Post #30.
